Bob Dylan. Premio Principe de Asturias de las Artes en 2007:

Robert Allen Zimmerman, conocido como Bob Dylan, nació en Duluth (Minnesota, EE.UU.) en 1941. Pionero en la introducción de la literatura en la música popular, fusionó por vez primera los ritmos de origen europeo y afroamericanos, lo que supuso una revolución de influencia decisiva para las generaciones de músicos posteriores. Comenzó a tocar la guitarra en la adolescencia y fue durante su paso por la Universidad de Minnesota y los ambientes folk, cuando decidió trasladarse a Nueva York para dedicarse por completo a la música. En 1961 lanzó su primer disco, Bob Dylan, del que vendió dos millones de copias. Su segundo álbum incluía Blowin´ in the Wind, que se convirtió en el himno de los movimientos pacifistas y pro derechos civiles en Estados Unidos. En 1964 The Times They Are A-Changin´ cerraba su etapa como intérprete de canción protesta. En 1965 Highway 61 Revisited, en el que está incluido el tema Like a Rolling Stone, cambió la concepción que se tenía del rock´n roll por la profundidad de sus textos poéticos. Con este trabajo acudió al Festival Folk de Newport, acompañado del grupo The Band, con el que colaboró hasta 1977, año en el que protagonizaron un concierto de despedida, The Last Waltz, que fue grabado y convertido en documental por Martin Scorsese. Tras sufrir un accidente de moto en 1966, reapareció en 1968 con John Wesley Harding. En 1973 compuso la banda sonora de la película Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid de Sam Peckimpah, donde además interpretó un papel secundario. Dos años más tarde rodó su única película como director, Renaldo and Clara, aunque participó en varias bandas sonoras y sus temas están presentes en otras muchas. También fue guionista de Masked and Anonymous (2003), de Charles Larry.

En la década de los ochenta grabó varios álbumes centrados en sus nuevas inquietudes religiosas y se unió, durante un tiempo, a los Travelling Wilburys. En 1997 actuó ante el Papa Juan Pablo II en Bolonia (Italia). Firme defensor de causas sociales, ha colaborado en iniciativas solidarias como los conciertos Farm Aid y el Festival Pro-Etiopía Live Aid y, en 2006, actuó en una playa de San Sebastián bajo el lema "Concierto por la Paz" ante más de 100.000 personas. Por sus 25 años de carrera, su discográfica publicó el álbum quíntuple Biograph (1985), con algunas versiones inéditas. En 2004 salió a la venta su autobiografía, Chronicles, Volume One, a la que habían precedido varios libros de escritos y recopilaciones de sus letras. Con su último trabajo, Modern Times (2006), volvió a ocupar el primer puesto de las listas de ventas en Estados Unidos y recibió dos Grammys: mejor álbum de folk contemporáneo y mejor solista de rock por el tema Someday baby.

Además, ha recibido a lo largo de su vida profesional otros cinco Grammys y en 1991 el Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Comendador de la Orden de las Artes y las Letras francesas, en 1997 fue distinguido con el Kennedy Center Honors a la labor artística de toda una vida, y en el año 2000 recibió de manos del Rey de Suecia el Premio Polar que concede la Academia Sueca de la Música. En 2001 recibió un Oscar a la mejor canción original y un Globo de Oro por su tema Things Have Changed, incluida en la película The Wonder Boys. Doctor honoris causa por la Universidad de Princeton, fue incluido por la revista Time en la lista de las 100 personas más influyentes del siglo XX. Tras casi medio siglo de carrera ha vendido más de 90 millones de álbumes.

José Lladó Fernández-Urrutia y actuando de secretario D. José Antonio Caicoya, ha acordado otorgar el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Artes 2007 a Robert Allen Zimmerman, Bob Dylan, mito viviente en la historia de la música popular y faro de una generación que tuvo el sueño de cambiar el mundo. Austero en las formas y profundo en los mensajes, Dylan conjuga la canción y la poesía en una obra que crea escuela y determina la educación sentimental de muchos millones de personas.
Por ello mismo, es fiel reflejo del espíritu de una época que busca respuestas en el viento para los deseos que habitan en el corazón de los seres humanos.

 Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues
This is a segment from D. A. Pennebaker's film, Dont Look Back (a documentary on Bob Dylan's tour of England in 1965). In the film, Dylan holds up cue cards for the audience with words from the song on them. While staring at the camera, he flips the cards as the song plays. Interestingly, there are intentional errors throughout the video. For instance, the song's lyrics say "eleven dollar bills," but the poster says "20 dollars". The video takes place in an alley behind The Savoy Hotel in London where poet Allen Ginsberg makes a cameo appearance.
